Some dogs will not put their back legs into anything.

You can spend three minutes on a wet doormat negotiating about the second hind leg, or you can put the front legs in, run the zip up the back and go. The jacket is the second option. It is the quickest thing we make to get onto a dog.

Sizing is far more forgiving than a full-body suit

A jumpsuit has to fit properly. Back length, chest, where the hind legs sit, all of it at once. Out by a few centimetres and the dog moves oddly, and you notice it on every walk. A jacket has no hind legs to place, so the same size sits correctly on a much wider range of builds.

If your dog is between two sizes, or will not stand still for a tape measure, buy this one. For stockists: sizing is the usual reason dog clothing comes back. This model takes most of that risk out of the order.

Fabric

Waterproof breathable membrane, the same one we use in the full-body raincoats. Rain runs off it, wind does not come through it, and it does not crackle like a plastic poncho.

Lining, your choice

Mesh (light) for autumn and spring. Fleece (warm) for winter. Pick at checkout. The mesh in this model is yellow, not grey, because the inside of a coat is still part of the coat.

Put a fleece romper under it in winter

Our fleece rompers were cut to layer under this. Fleece on the legs and the body, membrane on top, and it still goes on faster than a jumpsuit does.

Details

  • full-length zip along the back
  • lead opening at the neck, bound with reflective tape, so the harness stays underneath and dry
  • adjustable elastic loops for the hind legs, which stop the back of the jacket riding up. The E sizes have none, because the sighthound pattern is cut longer at the back and follows the line of the spine, so it stays put on its own.
  • reflective piping along both sides
  • standard collar with a drawcord and stopper, and no hood. In the E sizes the collar is cut higher, for sighthound necks.

Sizes

26 sizes across five pattern families. A and B for standard builds, C for large breeds, D for dachshunds and corgis, E for sighthounds. A28-1 and A33-1 are the same lengths as A28 and A33 cut for a narrower chest. Measure the chest first, it decides the size. The back length only confirms it, and most people measure it too long. Measure to the base of the tail.
